How to install a CanoScan N650U scanner on Vista or Windows 7

I have an Canon CanoScan N650U scanner that I use a few times a year. Canon never released Vista drivers for this scanner, using the instructions below made the scanner work on Windows 7 for me:

  1. Download the XP drivers from Canon’s website
  2. Install the drivers
  3. The driver didn’t install, but unzipped to C:/Temp/CanoScanCSUv571a
  4. Go to C:/Temp/CanoScanCSUv571a and uncompress CanoScanCSUv571a.exe
  5. Plug in your scanner
  6. Go to your device manager.
  7. Click on Add a Device and select the scanner
  8. Right click to update driver information
  9. Select browse my computer for driver software
  10. Type in: C:\Temp\CanoScanCSUv571a
  11. Click next and my scanner worked

Update: In the comments Paul wrote, “I used the WIA drivers, which I found here: http://www.normalgeeks.com/Canoscan_WIA.zip”  I haven’t tried it, but’s worth checking out.

Didn’t work for me (Windows 7 64-bit), I’m afraid. However, Vuescan (http://www.hamrick.com/) a scanning application with built-in drivers for older scanners, worked perfectly, and my CanoScan is up and running. At $40, Vuescan is a bit pricey, but at least I have a scanner again.

Thank you. Canon should provide the updates to perfectly good equipment. Well done for your help. It works.

With Vista 64-bit, the XP drivers don’t work. (They do work fine on Vista 32-bit, and those are great directions.)
Has anyone managed to get the WIA to work under Vista 64-bit?
    Or anythiing besides Vuescan?

My old Scanner N650U works under WIN 7 (32bit) like under XP.
I just wanted to buy a new one………….

Did anyone get the ScanGear Toolbox software which comes with the Canoscan N650U working on Windows 7 [32 bits]? Or is there alternative software with the same functionality?

This worked great on 32 bit win 7, except that documents are scanning at half size using windows fax and scan. I can’t find a way to change this?

  12. Leo

XP driver from canon website worked in Windows 7 32-bit for me.. I even installed the Canon Scangear toolbox from Canon website as well… everything worked well for me..

    Thanks Daniel
I was using my CanoScan on my old XP machine for a month. Now I can use it on my 32 bit Windows 7 machine.
The manual scan feature doesn’t work, but that’s O.K…I use Publisher to scan and it works perfectly.
    Once again thanks.

So the WIA driver is for a whole bunch of scanner models not including the N650. Which other model should I pretend that I have ?

  16. peegee

    Thank you so much!!
followed ur tips and successfully installed for vista.
not being that proficient, it was simple and straight-forward.

I was also getting the message “THERE IS NO APPLICATION REGISTERED FOR THIS EVENT” photoshop worked fine. got a serial number for photoshop online too so didnt cost me a thing. I am so pleased because this is such a good scanner.
MANY MANY THANKS TO PAUL & B

The drivers do not work for x64 systems, so don’t even bother. Vuescan provides the x64 driver for this scanner in their scanners.inf.

  19. Martijn

After multiple attempts installing drivers I settled with VueScan which does an outstanding job for my CanoScan Lide 20 on Windows 7 64bit!

  20. ado

    You just saved me £100.

Was just about to buy new scanner, when I decided to google one last time… and presto, it works. Cannon should be ashamed of themselves.

    Windows 7 64bit
    Canoscan N650U
Trying to install WIA does not work
In device driver: uninstalled canoscan from earlier trials.
When I plug in scanner, a text balloon appears saying: installing for device driver software
This one the disappears and a new one appears saying: device driver software not succesfully installed

When i then go to the device driver” the canoscan is on the list with a yellow exclamation mark.
Whe I click on it, I get the properties saying: that the drivers are not installed.

    When I click: update driver
the click Browse my computer for driver software
Then search for software on location: then go to : CANOSCAN WIA
Then to N65UW (name closest to N650U) or any of the other folders: i get the answer: Windows could not find driver.
The same thing happens when I go to any of the other folders or when I stay in the canoscan WIA folder.

    Any idea?

  22. Jeff

I just downloaded and tried the vuescan software and driver for my Canon N650u Scanner in Windows 7 64 bit . You download the trial version to see if it works on your system before you buy it. The trial version scans with dollar signs spread over the scan. I havent bought it yet but it works well installed the driver and software automaticaly so I think i will have to buy it $39 cheaper than a new scanner

  23. Gary

So on Windows Vista is it impossible to use the CanoScan N650U without photoshop? I get the message “There is no application registered for this event.”
