Lance Armstrong’s Exceptionalism

Today, Lance Armstrong crashed in the first stage of , Vuelta a Castilla y León, breaking his collarbone. This wreck underscores one of the reasons Lance Armstrong’s 7 Tour de France victories in a row were so exceptional—nothing ever went so wrong it kept Armstrong from winning.

For example, this bad crash happened to Joseba Beloki, not him:

Even when Armstrong crashed on the Luz Ardiden in 2003 was luckily not injured (the video below is in German because I couldn’t take the techno soundtrack of this version)

I’m not the biggest Armstrong fan, but I like that he is racing again because it means that there are more options to watch races. It will now be difficult for Armstrong to race the Giro d’Italia, which is too bad. I don’t think Armstrong would win, but I would like to see better coverage of the Giro in the U.S.
